TOWN OF EVANS, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Town of Evans has declared a state of emergency due to ice jams and flooding.
Officials say the declaration is effective February 17, 2022 for up to 24-36 hours.
Residents on Bennett Road said water rose ten feet from the nearby Big Sister Creek, that flows downhill from their property. By Friday night the ice thawed, and water receded back down toward the creek. It also left frozen rings around bases of trees in backyards, where the water once reached and froze.
Route 5 was closed from Beach Road to Sturgeon Point Road due to flooding Thursday, it remains closed as of 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Town of Evans Disaster Coordinator said the New York State Department of Transporation inspected the bridge on Erie Road that runs over Big Sister Creek, and the state will decide when to open it. That's the area where an ice jam was Friday afternoon.

South Buffalo homes were also flooded on Zittel and Spaulding Streets.
"This is worst its been in years," said Frank Sanak who said there was close to a foot in his basement Thursday night.
National Fuel workers were turning the heat back on in homes, after it was shut off last night due to more than a foot of flooding on streets in that area.
