The world is watching the events in Korea as leaders from North and South Korea have met for the first time face-to-face and agreed to sign a peace agreement later this year. The peace accord would formally end the Korean War which began in 1950 and has been in a truce since 1953.
Among those watching closely are local veterans who never thought they would see peace in Korea during their lifetime. Do they believe it will actually happen? Many hope so but wonder if North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, will actually follow-through with his promise.
The war took the lives of many soldiers from WNY. Their names are now on permanent display at the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park's Korean War Memorial. The naval park also has a large Korean War display featuring many items donated by families of loved ones who served there.
A popular naval park attraction the U.S.S. The Sullivans is well-known for its role in World War II but it also did combat duty in Korea.
7 Eyewitness News Reporter Ed Reilly spoke with several veterans including Conrad Wahl, 85, who was nearly killed in Korea just months before the armistice was signed.
