ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. (WKBW) — The SPCA has announced that the hawk brought to them by the Amherst Highway Department has passed Saturday morning.

Earlier this month, an Amherst Highway Department employee spotted an adult red tail hawk on Meadowstream Drive. The highway department says the bird was frozen.

The hawk was brought to the SPCA's Wildlife Department where it was put on an incubator. He was cared for by wildlife veterinarian Dr. Karen Slote and Wildlife Department employees and volunteers.

According to the SPCA, he was caked in ice and most likely hypothermic. He also had severe head trauma, which caused visual impairment. They believe he could have been injured and unwell for a while before being found.
