USA Hockey will make a major announcement Friday from Ralph Wilson Stadium.

A source tells 7 Eyewitness Sports Anchor Shawn Stepner that the 2018 World Junior Championships are coming to Buffalo.

Bills and Sabres owner Terry Pegula; Russ Brandon, president for both teams; USA Hockey president Jim Smith; and other officials will announce Friday that the tournament is coming to the Queen City and Stepner has learned that part of the tournament will include an outdoor game at the Ralph.

The tournament will start in December 2017 with the title game held in January 2018.

The World Juniors were last held in downtown Buffalo in 2011. It brought more than 330,000 fans over the 11-day event and was the second-best attended junior tournament at that time.

It won’t be until 2018 when a U.S. city will again be eligible to host the World Junior Championships. Other cities being considered included St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Tampa.

The official announcement will be made at 3 p.m. Friday on the 18-yard line at the stadium in Orchard Park.
