It has been nearly two years since Mayouna Smith was found dead inside an Amherst apartment.

Now, 7 Eyewitness News has learned the case is focusing on the mother's live-in boyfriend who is no where to be found.

Three year old Mayouna Smith's short life was simple, but her case has become much more complex since she was killed.

Amherst Police Captain James McNamara says there are two persons of interest in the death. Mayouna's mother and her former live-in boyfriend Lemare who still refuses to cooperate with police. They say they haven't spoken to him in about a year.

Captain McNamara says all evidence has been collected except for a sworn statement from Lemare who, according to a state fatality report obtained by 7 Eyewitness News, is to blame for the sexual abuse Mayouna suffered, in addition to lacerations and internal injuries which led to her death.

Still, police say there isn't enough evidence to arrest him.

According to the fatality report, Mayouna died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen and the medical examiner explains in the report, she could have survived had someone called for help.
