NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WKBW) — The former owners of a neglected dog, who was found severely emaciated, have been sentenced to jail time and probation for abusing their pet.

Joseph Barwick and Dorothy Adama were arrested back in May after police investigated an anonymous report of animal cruelty. The dog, renamed Sam Sam by her rescuers, received extensive treatment and therapy to address the damage done to her system after the neglect.

"She definitely didn't deserve what she had done to her," said Dr. Corey, the veterinarian who treated the dog.

Barwick and Adama admitted to the animal cruelty and neglect in late June after Sam Sam was adopted by a local couple and renamed "Sophie".

On Wednesday, Barwick and Adama were both sentenced in North Tonawanda City Court to sixty days in jail and three years of probation.
