A three-alarm fire destroyed an apartment building in Allegany Thursday morning, forcing 15 people from their homes.

The fire started around midnight at the Emerald Hill Estates, a building that houses residents who are low income, elderly, and/or disabled. The building is on East Main Street, right across the street from the St. Bonaventure University campus.

Firefighters say the blaze may have started in the middle of the building and spread through the attic. Wind gusts may have helped the fire spread.

Flames, at one point, were shooting 30 feet in the air, according to officials at the scene. But thankfully, no one was hurt.

The Red Cross is stepping in to help those forced out by the fire.

Fire investigators are now working to figure out how this fire started.
