BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — It's peak mosquito season and after a soggy spring, these critters have the perfect place to call home.

The fear is all this standing water makes it easy for mosquitos to breed, which means there could be a big increase when it comes to bug bites.

"You need to protect yourself with long sleeved shirts, long pants and protective spray," Peter Tripi, Senior Public Health Sanitarian for Erie County Department of Health, said.

Last August--three New York counties had confirmed cases of West Nile Virus. One person in Monroe County died in September due to the illness. Erie County saw mosquitos tested positive for West Nile in September.

Mosquitos can be pesky any time of day, but especially at dawn and dusk. Consumer Reports says either Deet, oil of lemon Eucalyptus or Picaridin were ingredient found in its top=performing products through testing.

Experts also urge homeowners to dump out any standing water outside.
