TOWN OF ROYALTON, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Niagara County Health Department is spreading the word about its first confirmed rabies case of 2019.
Health officials say a raccoon tested positive for the virus. The raccoon apparently attacked two sheep at a farm on Ditch Road in the Town of Royalton before the owner intervened, killing the animal.
The Niagara County Health Department is reminding people to follow these precautions to help prevent exposure to rabies from wildlife and domestic animals:
- Do not feed, touch or adopt wild animals, stray dogs or feral cats.
- Be sure your dogs and cats are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations.
- Keep family pets indoors at night.
- Encourage children to immediately tell an adult if they are bitten by any animals.
Report all animal bites or contact with wild animals to the Niagara County Department of Health Environmental Division at 716-439-7444 or 716-439-7430 after hours.
The Niagara County Department of Health will be holding its next free rabiesclinic on June 1 at the Hyde Park Pavilion in Niagara Falls from 9a.m.-11a.m.
In April, a boy was bitten by a rabid raccoonwhile hunting in Chautauqua County.
