NEWFANE, NY (WKBW) — A Niagara County rehab is now under the state’s microscope.

Two sources have confirmed to 7 Eyewitness News the New York State Attorney General's office is investigating an alleged rape at the Newfane Rehab and Healthcare Center in Newfane.

Sources say investigators with the AG’s office were on site Wednesday, a day after the state health department confirmed it was looking into the same allegation.

The AG’s office tells 7 Eyewitness News it is "aware of the allegations" and taking steps to make sure "all residents are safe.”

But the Newfane facility is strongly denying the allegations – going as far as to say the state’s investigation is already over.

Newfane Rehab administrator Craig Shaffer said there was "no rape" at the facility.

Shaffer's statement goes on to say "mandated by the New York State Department of Health, the facility leadership has conducted a thorough investigation and found no evidence to support this complaint."

It also states the facility is working closely with the state health department and has provided all requested documentation for review.

We did try to speak with visitors learning the nursing home Wednesday afternoon, but no one wanted to go on-camera, however, two gentlemen did tell me that one of the resident's they visited said that there was an investigation and that family members were calling her with concerns.

We also reached out to local law enforcement. The Niagara County Sheriff said Tuesday it wasn't investigating an incident. Wednesday
New York State Police Public Information Officer James O'Callaghan tells us the state police have "no record of the incident" at this time.
