RIDGEWAY, NY (WKBW-TV) — It was once called the "eighth wonder of the world". The tunnel on Culvert Road in the Town of Ridgeway was built in 1823. Historian Catherine Cooper says "It would have been tough work, they were tough people."
The tunnel is one-lane, and when you drive through you can't help but notice that it's wet inside. Catherine says "It leaks, yes it does it leaks all the time."
The leaks inside the tunnel make sense when you realize that the tunnel takes you under the Erie Canal. Catherine points out "it's the only place where the road runs under the canal."
The tunnel was recognized by Ripley's Believe It Or Not. According to Catherine it has been rebuilt a few times over the past two centuries and is very safe adding "It hasn't collapsed in all this time, it's in good shape."
