BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — A Lackawanna man is headed to prison for a drunk driving crash that killed three people and seriously injured four others.

A judge sentenced 21-year-old Richard Sawicki Thursday to 6 2/3 to 20 years in state prison for Aggravated Vehicular Homicide.

The crash happened in May of 2019 in Varysburg. Sawicki was drunk and speeding when he blew through a stop sign and his vehicle crashed into a minivan carrying nine people. Three people inside that van died. Four others including a young girl were seriously injured.

"This event has shaken our community and forever harmed not only the Brito Castro Family but our many volunteer first responders that answered the call that fateful morning. We are forever grateful for their service,” said Donald O’Geen, Wyoming County District Attorney.
