WATCH: Man armed with scissors and box cutter shot by Buffalo police officer
Just before 4:40 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Broadway and Liddell Street, on security camera footage 7 News obtained from a nearby business, a grill is thrown at a person on Broadway.

Following this, that same footage appears to show an altercation down the street, which the police happen to drive upon.
"Officers from the Ferry-Fillmore district were flagged down by a civilian," Buffalo Police First Deputy Commissioner of Operations Craig Macy said.

Macy says officers approached the individual, who has yet to be named by BPD.
"Officers did approach the male subject. They did give verbal commands. They attempted to have an interaction with this male subject, at which point the subject produced two-edged weapons: one scissors and another a box cutter, one in each hand," Macy said. "The subject was cutting himself, saying he was going to kill himself, and officers were still fighting with him over those edged weapons that he had. He had multiple lacerations and cuts to his neck and chest that were all self-inflicted."

That's when Macy says an officer was stabbed in the back by the individual, and as a result, a taser was deployed. He says the taser was effective, but the subject still held on to both weapons.
As seen in a different video posted on social media, the officer who was stabbed continues to confront the individual as he runs into the street. Police say the individual dropped one of his weapons at this point.

"So he has an edged weapon in one hand, and the other hand is free. I wouldn’t be comfortable saying he gets a hold of the [officer's] gun, but it is very close," Macy said.
Police then say the officer who was stabbed shot the individual twice in the torso and hip.

Officers are then seen on video making a kicking motion toward the person while he was lying on the ground. Macy says the individual was still holding a weapon.
"It’s on the subject’s hand, who still has the edged weapon, and he is still saying that he is going to kill himself," Macy said.
The investigation is ongoing, but one Buffalo Common Council member has already called for better handling of mental health calls.
Masten District Common Council Member Zeneta Everhart is calling for better training for police in the wake of the shooting. She wrote on social media: "I have spoken loudly about the need for the behavioral health team to flex their hours and for more training in de-escalation tactics."
Last month, Everhart asked Macy, while he was serving as the interim police commissioner, about the status of the Buffalo Police Behavioral Health Team, which pairs clinicians with police officers to handle mental health calls.
Macy indicated changes are coming.

"We are going to get a significant amount more of clinicians to go out with BHT that is going to be partnered with another governmental agency. And then there will be a plan for to get us out of the follow-up business and to have that with another entity," Macy said.
Buffalo Police Commissioner Erika Shields will hold a news conference Tuesday afternoon, when she is expected to release police body camera footage.
