Grand Island Amazon plans on hold

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WKBW) — Amazon was supposed to bring a new distribution center to Grand Island. At least a thousand jobs were supposed to come with it, but those plans are now on pause.

The Grand Island town board was supposed to be the next step for “Project Olive,” what we now know is the Amazon distribution center planned for the northwest part of the island.Last week, the town planning board did not recommend the zoning for the site be changed to suit the online retailer. That zoning decision would ultimately be decided upon by the town board.

Monday night, the Amazon agenda item was removed from Monday night's meeting. The developer of the land did speak in the board's workshop meeting.

“To me, it's an absolute no brainer for the economics of the Town of Grand Island,” said Michael Huntress with Acquest Development.

Since the project is on hold, for now, most in the community kept their comments short on Monday night.“You know we will monitor the situation very closely," said Cathy Rayhill, the spokesperson for the opposition to the Amazon plan on Grand Island.
