Buffalo's Groundhog Day is a party at home for a good cause

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — There is a big question looming in Buffalo and it's all to do with the weather. Will we see six more weeks of winter or an early spring?

In Western New York, it's Buffalo Bert who makes that prognostication. The groundhog will make its determination on Saturday.

Buffalo Bert will appear--in a virtual format on Facebook Live--from Flying Bison Brewery at 2 p.m.

Ordinarily, there's a huge party outside the brewery, celebrating winter, raising money for Hawk Creek Wildlife Center in East Aurora.

This year, we'll lose the party, but you can still celebrate at home.

"This is a really important opportunity for us to raise money for them and give them the opportunity for them to grow and maintain the animals they have there. It's really a wonderful event and I think people can have fun at home," said Andrew Kowaleski from Buffalo Groundhog Day Society.

Flying Bison is selling Blizzard Bock beer to mark the occasion for $8. You'll also get a drink token to use at next year's in-person party. That party is already being planned.

"We just know the ninth year is going to be out of control," said co-founder Adam Hernandez. "It's going to be the most fun, the biggest party that we've ever thrown and we are actively planning it."
