BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Thursday morning, firefighters and police were called to the Buffalo Sewage Authority Treatment Plant on Bird Island for a water rescue, after a contractor fell into a well.

The water rescue then turned into a recovery mission, and his body was discovered Friday morning around 5 a.m. About 300 feet from where he entered the water.

"It's a very difficult process to find out exactly where he could've been. And we took every step imaginable to locate him," said William Renaldo, Commissioner of the Buffalo Fire Department.

The Fire Department was able to get a sonar-enabled robot from the Canadian firm ASI Group to help them find the body.

In addition to their visual search, they looked at sewer cameras and all access points.

The Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration is investigating exactly what happened. The worker has not been identified at this time.
