Dogs at Brighton-Eggert Animal Clinic in Tonawanda are coming in daily to get their flu shots. For first time canines getting the flu vaccination, it comes in two parts with the second shot following three-four weeks later.
Sixteen-month-old Yellow Lab, Lola, was one of the pups that received her canine flu--or CIV--shots.
In dogs there are only two identified flu strains. The vaccine covers both. These strains don't differ year-to-year like we se in humans.
Those dogs most at risk are socially active ones--those that board, go to daycare, the groomers and travel. CIV is highly contagious and spreads through droplets in the air.
Symptoms include:
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Fever
- Runny Eyes
- Lethargy
- Difficulty breathing
If your dog experiences any of these symptoms, you're urged to take your furry friend to the vet immediately.
