Getting back to the bare roots in Brandt

The busy Bare Root Barn at Turnbull Nursery

Some newcomers are shocked when they walk into the Bare Root Barn at Turnbull Nursery in the Town of Brandt according to owner Rob Turnbull that's because the trees and shrubs look dead, adding "they are only dormant, not dead, they are just in a dormant state."

The most prominent feature here is that the trees and shrubs are not nestled comfortably in dirt, or in anything for that matter. The roots are completely exposed. Rob says they have been selling plants like this for generations.

With no plastic pots and less fuel consumption in shipping, buying "Bare Root" is kinder to the environment. Rob points out another advantage "they cost about half what plants in dirt and pots cost".

The Bare Root Barn features hundreds of different shrubs and trees including thirty varieties of apple trees. These plants need to be in the ground no later than May 1st. Ron says that customers can pick out plants now and then just pick them up when they are ready to plant.
