Buffalo firefighters responded to a blaze on Herkimer Street around 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Before crews arrived the fire spread to the home next door.

A Lieutenant at the scene said first responders believe everyone made it out of both homes.

7 Eyewitness News spoke with both families who said they have no idea how the fire started.

A mother from inside one of the homes said she saw flames coming from the house next-door, rushed downstairs, put a coat on her son and ran outside minutes before the fire spread to her home.

It appears that a dog from inside one of the homes died on scene.

The American Red Cross has been called to help the families.
