BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Wegmans Food Markets will allow employees of the supermarket chain to wear masks, if they choose to, going forward.

The new policy was announced on Thursday and goes into place immediately.

According to 13 WHAM, the ABC affiliate in Rochester, Monroe County Legislator Rachel Barnhart has been pushing for the supermarket chain to allow their employees to wear masks, gloves or other forms of personal protective equipment while on the job.

"We have always operated under the premise that we can only achieve our goals if we first meet the needs of our people," a spokesperson for Wegmans said in an emailed statement.

According to a Wegmans spokesperson the decision was made despite the fact that the CDC does not currently require or recommend the wearing of masks for grocery employees.

Last week, Wegmans announced that they are also in the process of installing plastic shields to protect cashiers.
