Are you good with kids? Looking for a summer job? The YMCA could be your next employer, it is currently in the process of hiring up to 500 summer camp related jobs for Summer 2019. Camp counselors, unit leaders, camp specialists and lifeguards are needed in seasonal, full-time positions at summer camp sites across Erie and Niagara County.

“You get to be outside, you get to play with kids all day you can’t ask for a much better job than that," said Shannon McCooey, Program Coordinator for the Southtowns YMCA. McCooey has held multiple positions in her six year tenure with the YMCA, including camp counselor.

“The Y is like a family to me... You really have to take off your cool hat when you go to camp, you have to be in it with the kids you can’t worry about adult stuff, you have to be in the moment with the kids," said McCooey.

Camp counselor pay ranges from $11.30 an hour to $13.00 an hour, with lifeguard pay ranging slightly higher.

Qualifications to become a camp counselor/lifeguard* include:

  • 18 years old
  • YMCA and New York State background check
  • Experience with children
  • AED & OD certified*

Summer camp spans the 10 weeks between school break from June 24 to August 31. If you are employed by the YMCA, your family will receive a free membership as well. For more information, attend the YMCA's summer camp staff recruitment day on March 23 or click here.
