D’Youville’s College of Nursing received a $400,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help with the problem of the nursing shortage in the country.

Congressman Brian Higgins was on hand during the announcement which will help forgive the student loans up to 85% for 8 doctoral students and 20 masters students who commit to pursuing a career in teaching about nursing.

He said the nursing shortage is due to the baby-boomer population retiring and leaving a gap in the workforce that isn’t being filled because there aren’t enough people to teach and train qualified nurses.
