BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — January 2020 is coming to an end, and it's been a rather tame month by Buffalo winter standards.

Our average temperature for the month is 33.5 degrees. That puts January 2020 as the ninth-warmest January on record.

Warmest January months

  1. 37.2 1932
  2. 36.7 1880
  3. 35.0 1950
  4. 34.9 2006
  5. 34.6 1933
  6. 33.8 1913
  7. 33.4 1990
  8. 33.4 1906
  9. 33.2 2020

Our snow totals are well below normal, with only 13.0 inches of snow this month.

Our monthly snow totals are 12.3" below normal.

The least amount of snow for Buffalo occurred in 1933 with 0.7 inches. That's right, less than 1" of snow accumulated in January, 1933.

Lake Erie is wide open, with ice coverage on less than 1% of the lake. That means a blast of Arctic air could lead to some impressive lake effect snow totals. Right now that cold air is bottled up over the North Pole. Models continue to keep the cold air out of WNY through early February. By mid-February we could see a pattern change, but right now we can only wait and see.
