Jessica Pegula beats No. 12 ranked tennis player in Australian Open

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA (WKBW) — Western New York native Jessica Pegula is advancing in the 2021 Australian Open, after beating Victoria Azarenka in the opening round.

The Buffalo native and daughter of Bills and Sabres owners Kim and Terry Pegula defeated the 12th ranked women's tennis player in the world in just two sets (7-5, 6-4).

Azarenka, who won the tournament twice, had to take a medical pause in the second set, and was seen on the court with an inhaler.

Pegula, who is ranked 61st in the world will play Australian native Samantha Stosur, ranked 112th, at midnight Thursday morning Eastern Time.
