Sydney Nowicki has been running cross country for a few years.

Last year as an 8th grader, she saw her season come to an end in the state meet. It was then that she became determined to make it to Regionals.

"I think last year we made it a goal because I wanted to make it but I didn't end up making it," Nowicki said. "So it was definitely a goal and I was happy to fulfill the goal and get to run there."

After a 13th place finish at the state level, Nowicki got to run at Regionals and a top 10 finish would give her the chance to extend her season.

She finished 11th -- but due to other factors, Sydney's finish ended up a little higher.

"I was able to make it because I was the 5th individual when you took all the team runners out."

Nowicki's 5th place finish means she'll represent Lockport at the Nike Cross Nationals.

Her coach says it's an incredible accomplishment after joining the team back in 7th grade.

"Just to see that evolution that she's gotten better every year, it's just awesome," said her coach Tim Willett.

This weekend, Nowicki will travel to Oregon and compete against more than 200 runners around the country.

While a top 50 finish is in her sights, Nowicki's just excited to have the opportunity.

"I'm happy. I get to run against the best of the best and I'm excited," she said. "I hope I run a good time."
