The Niagara Wheatfield girls volleyball team has never played in the NYSPHSAA State Tournament. All of that will change this weekend when the Falcons compete against some of the best in the state.
The Falcons had an incredible regular season, finishing atop the Section and winning the Class A Section VI title for the first time ever. They went on to the Far West Regional round where they once again beat the competition to secure a spot in this weekend's Tournament.
The majority of the girls on Varsity have been playing alongside each other for years and are an experienced bunch. They know that while they've done well in the regular season, the State Tournament is a whole new ballgame.
"All year we've been top of our league, we won the Section, we just won Regionals for the first time," said senior Jenna Sonnenberg. "Although we have the underdog mentality just in the sense that we've never gone before but honestly if we just focus on our side of the net, I think we'll be able to accomplish great things at States."
"This year our expectation wasn't to win every game, it was that we wanted to," added senior Danielle Brochey. "We wanted to be able to work to win every game and I think that mindset is what helped us to the Section Finals and our Regional game. We knew it wasn't going to be easy but we knew it was something we could do if we put our minds to it and I think that's the same mindset that we plan on bringing on Saturday."
The Falcons will begin pool play on Saturday afternoon against Cornwall, Burnt Hills and Wantagh. The top teams will advance to the Finals on Sunday.
