CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Maryvale High School cheer squad beat nearly 70 other teams from all over New York state.

Their tumbling, dancing, and impressive pyramid earned them the top spot in Rochester over the weekend.

Coach Joanne Strychalski says there was a lot of talent on this team, and their hard work throughout the season helped them win their first championship in school history.

"We just put together something that was perfect for their skills and everything else," Strychalski said. "They worked so hard and I knew they could do this."

"Hopefully this shows people that cheering is not just clapping and that it really means a lot to people," said Kaila Pace and and Jenna Raczka.

The Flyers say they hope this win will give them the recognition they feel they deserve.
