Rugby, sailing and squash are now Varsity sports at Canisius High School.
The school announced the addition of the three sports Thursday morning to their athletics program, bringing the total number of varsity sports offered to 19.
The three were formally club sports.
In a press release sent to WKBW, Director of Athletics, Jim Mauro said, “All three programs have shown sustainability and growth over the past number of years at Canisius. We anticipate the trend will continue and the elevation to varsity status will promote it even further. We are proud that the programs have already offered collegiate opportunities for some of our athletes, but more importantly, these three sports have enhanced the overall student-athlete experience.”
The three programs will compete against local teams and also travel to some tournaments and regional events.
