Williamsville South, a Section VI power in boys basketball this year in their own right, welcomed in a power from just down Interstate-90 for a battle. Out of Rochester, Aquinas came to town for the non-league battle.
It was close all the way through, but ultimately a late three from Jason Hawkes sealed the deal for Aquinas, getting the victory over the Billies 54-51.
It's already playoff time for girls hockey in Section VI, and the Northtown Center hosted both quarterfinal matchups.
In the early contest, Julia Mings of 3rd-seeded Amherst/SweetHome/Clarence stole the show, totaling five goals together in the game -- and by doing so, scored her 100th career goal. Mings' effort helped Amherst to the 10-4 victory over 6th-seeded Lancaster/Iroquois/Depew.
They'll move on to take on 2nd-seeded Orchard Park/Frontier/Lake Shore in the semi-finals.
In the second quarterfinal matchup of the evening, 4th-seeded Kenmore/Grand Island snuck past 5th-seeded West Seneca/Hamburg/Eden -- even after the latter scored a goal in the first minute of the game. Kenmore now moves on to play top-seeded Williamsville in the other semi-final matchup.
The Section VI girls hockey semi's will take place on Monday at the Northtown Center.
