AMHERST, NY (WKBW) — University at Buffalo punter Evan Finegan has been named a semifinalist for the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year. The junior is one of 14 semifinalists up for the annual award.

In 2019, Finegan's season was cut short after he was injured in the team's week two game against Penn State when he was hit by a defender and wound up breaking his tibia and fibula. After a successful surgery, Finegan regained the starting job for the 2020 season. He's punted 16 times and has averaged 38.8 yards a punt.

"Our goal is to help fans better appreciate the roads these student-athletes have traveled," says Doug Vance, executive director of CoSIDA said in a press release. "We hope these stories of achievement can inspire other people to meet the challenges in their own lives."

The three winners will be announced on January 2nd, 2021.
