“I am excited to take over at Canisius on a number of levels,” Witherspoon said in a statement. “Having grown up here in the area, I remember going to see a lot of Canisius games as a kid, and then as I grew older, I started to become friends with guys that played or were playing at Canisius."
The 55-year-old Buffalo native spent the 2014-2015 season with Alabama and this past year as an assistant with Chattanooga, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
While the head coach with the Bulls, Witherspoon went 198-228 and 96-142 in Mid-American Conference play. He was also named the MAC Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2012.
A press conference is scheduled for Tuesday at Canisius.
