ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (WKBW) — The Niagara Purple Eagles men's basketball team advanced to the second round of the MAAC tournament, while the Canisius Golden Griffins' season is over.

The No. 6 seeded Niagara University defeated Marist 56-54, lead by Marcus Hammond's 20 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

The Purple Eagles will face No. 3 seed Rider University in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on Thursday; the two teams split the season series 1-1.

Canisius' season is over on the heels of a 70-60 loss to Iona.

It was the final collegiate game for Canisius senior Malik Johnson, who finishes his career as the school's all-time leader in assists.
