Niagara men win, Canisius falls in Thursday night games

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — As the Metro Atlantic regular season schedule winds down, the Niagara and Canisius men's basketball teams continue to battle for postseason seeding. Both teams were in action Thursday night.

Niagara moved up in the latest conference standings following a 63-54 win over Saint Peter's. Both teams were evenly matched in the first half with a 26-26 tie after twenty minutes. The Purple Eagles though gained control and eventually pulled away over the course of the second half. Marcus Hammond led all scorers with 21 points and six rebounds. With the win the Purple Eagles improved to 10-18 overall and 8-9 in conference play.

Canisius, meanwhile, remained at the bottom of the conference following a 86-65 loss to Iona. Jordan Henderson led the Golden Griffs with 18 points while Majesty Brandon added 12 points off the bench. Jalanni White finished with 10 points and a team-leading five rebounds. With the loss the Griffs fall to 10-18 overall and 5-12 in conference play.

Niagara and Canisius will both be back in action on Saturday. The Purple Eagles will host Iona at 1 p.m. while the Griffs will host Saint Peter's at 2 p.m.
