Reggie Witherspoon's debut as the bench boss at Canisius got off to a great start, but ultimately his coaching return in the DI ranks was spoiled by #2 Kentucky 93-69 on Sunday.
The Griffs hung tough with the Wildcats for the majority of the first half, racing out a 9-2 lead. Canisius led 33-31 with 3:12 to play in the opening stanza before Kentucky used a 13-2 run to end the half open up a 44-35 lead.
In the second half the Wildcats used their length and athleticism to pull away from Canisius.
Kassius Robertson led the Griffs in scoring with a team high 16 while Jermiane Crumpton and Phil Valenti added 13 and 12 respectively. Valenti also had seven rebounds.
Four Wildcats scored double-figures, including Isaiah Briscoe and De'Aaron Fox, who each had 21.
