Daemen awarded bid to host women's basketball Regional Championship

AMHERST, NY (WKBW) — Daemen College will be home to a regional round of the 2021 NCAA DII Women's Basketball Championship. They'll be one of six sites for the tournament in March.

Six teams will take part in the East Regional with the official matchup announcements to come next month during the NCAA's selection show. Two quarterfinal games will be held March 12th with the semifinals and finals a few days later. The winner will advance to the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Elite Eight in Columbus, Ohio.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to host this NCAA Championship event and we thank the committee for their diligence in selecting each of the predetermined regional sites," Athletic Director Traci Murphy said in a press release. "Now that the bid has been awarded, the work on our end really begins. I'm confident that despite the challenges of the pandemic, we'll be able to provide a great experience for the participating student-athletes and coaches."

Lumsden Gymnasium on Daemen's campus has hosted a regional before in the sport of women's volleyball. This will be the first time they'll host a women's basketball regional event.
