BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) — Canisius College has found themselves a new head volleyball coach in Shannon Thompson.

“During my time with the search committee, it was very clear that there is a passion for developing student-athletes using a holistic approach, and to help create a strong student-athlete experience," Thompson said. "Canisius volleyball has a great foundation that I am excited to build upon and continue to create a winning culture.”

Thompson becomes the 13th head coach in program history, replacing former head coach Lenika Vazquez who left the program to coach at Northeastern.

“We are excited to welcome Shannon to the Canisius athletic department and the campus community,” Bill Maher, Director of Athletics, said. “Shannon did a terrific job throughout our selection process and has worked her way up the coaching ladder. At each stop, she has been able to identify and develop strong recruiting classes into quality student-athletes, while helping the members of the team grow both on and off the court. I look forward to working with her and our student-athletes as we chase the goal of a MAAC Championship.”

Thompson spent the last two years of her coaching career as an assistant at Campbell University in North Carolina. There, she helped build the Camels’ program into one of the better teams in the Big South Conference.

The Canisius volleyball team is coming off a 16-16 season and will return nine letter-winners from last year’s team.
