Kelly was taken in the 7th round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos but missed his first season after he was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list following offseason wrist surgery. He saw his first action on the NFL field in week 6 of the 2018 season. Shortly after, he was released by the team mid-season last year after an arrest for trespassing. He pled guilty two months ago to a misdemeanor criminal trespassing charge.
Kelly is the nephew of former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly. Jim sent out a congratulatory message over Twitter shortly after the news.
Congrats on the recent signing of my nephew and Godson Chad Kelly to the Indianapolis Colts. I know he has been through a lot and has made some mistakes in his life but I’ve spent some quality time with him the last… https://t.co/t2JzOVbX3e
