A 9 year-old boy is in critical condition following an afterschool accident in South Buffalo.

Police say the boy was hit by an SUV at Mesmer and Southside Parkway around 3pm Wednesday. Investigators believe the boy darted into the street just moments before the accident.

These pictures from our photographer Dave Thompson show the damage done to the vehicle.

Police on scene tell 7 Eyewitness News the victim has life threatening injuries and was taken to Women and Children's Hospital.

The accident happened close to South Park High School.  Residents who live there say that speeding cars are a constant problem.  They tell 7 Eyewitness News reporter Ed Reilly that a blinking caution light in front of the high school is not working to slow traffic.  Instead, they want to see more signs, lights and enforcement.

"I've seen kids walking off the steps, texting and looking down at their phone, they don't look and the cars aren't paying attention neither.  I knew it was only a matter of time until we had a tragedy here," said Nancy Standish.

The SUV that hit the child was taken away on a flatbed truck.  Buffalo Police have not said whether speed was a factor in the crash.

At this point no charges have been filed against the driver involved, but police say they are continuing to investigate
