A Hamburg woman was arraigned Tuesday morning for a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a young mother.

Ashley Sawicki is charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, resulting in a fatality. Prosecutors say the 21-year-old was behind the wheel on Big Tree Road when she struck and killed Jennifer Martello around 12:30 a.m. on July 15. Martello had been walking down the road at the time she was hit.

Sawicki knew she hit and likely injured another person, fled the scene and failed to report the collision, prosecutors contend.

If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.

Martello, 29, leaves behind her husband of two years, Sam, and toddler, Amelia.
