BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Construction on the former site of the Women and Children's Hospital on Bryant Street in Buffalo has begun, as the Elmwood Crossing project seeks a 2021 opening for the first phase.

Construction began earlier in the week on the former site of the physician's parking lot. That plot will become a mixed-use facility with retail, office spaces and apartments.

"A lot of the heavy lifting is in place and we're ready for a timeline to move forward," Amy Nagy, Sinatra & Co Director of Development said, "granted that there are no surprises."

The movement on the project has been a long wait, and Sinatra knows that.

"It's challenging having 8 acres of vacant space in your neighborhood," Nagy said, "We're doing the best we can to work with the neighbors and communicate with them what's happening."

The rest of Elmwood Crossing is expected to be completed in stages from 2021 to 2023.
