Why the US government is in the weather business

The United States Government does a lot.

It maintains national security, establishes trade agreements with foreign countries, initiates national infrastructure projects and determines the value of our currency.

It also researches and forecasts the weather with the National Weather Service.

That fact may be surprising, but monitoring the weather falls under national security, trade and infrastructure.
