Why an ex-Delta Sonic employee will be doing a whole lot of community service in the near future

Posted

The one-time environmental compliance officer for Delta Sonic has been sentenced to two years probation and 100 hours of community service that helps better the environment.

Michael Yount, 47, of Lancaster pleaded guilty in federal court to making a false statement. The statement was made to a DEC environmental programs technician, concerning a 2016 oil spill in Cayuga Creek in Niagara Falls. Between 300 to 500 gallons of oil spilled into the creek.

Yount misled the technician about the purpose and nature of boom left inside a storm sewer in the Delta Sonic parking lot. Yount said the boom was there for some time; it was actually placed there six days earlier after a complaint about oily wastewater leaking into the sewer.

Delta Sonic agreed to pay over $80,000 in cleanup fees and civil penalties as a result of the spill.
