For weeks hardware stores have had their shelves stocked with all of the winter essentials.

“With a slow start to the year with how warm it was, there really hasn’t been much going on until now,” Dan Crockford with Ace Hardware told 7 Eyewitness News.

Now that the Lake Effect snow has finally hit Western New York many are breaking out the shovels and attempting to move the first major act of Mother Nature.

While 7 Eyewitness News was checking out weather conditions across the region, we found folks in West Seneca who were braving the cold to clear their walkways.

Experts say be careful, snow removal is a major cause of winter related injuries.

“It is hard work especially if it is heavy lake effect snow,” Crockford said.

In 2014 the US Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 203,000 Americans were treated for injuries as a result of moving snow.

But Dan Crockford with the Ace Hardware on Summer Street in Buffalo says there are some ways to reduce your chance of injury, and it may start with your shovel.

“There are ones that are ergonomic where they are trying to get it so that you aren’t bent down as low, Crockford said. “There are even shovels where you don’t have to lift the snow at all you are just pushing it out of the way.”
