Will Amazon expand same-day shipping service?

Posted

According to Bloomberg, Amazon is considering expanding its same-day shipping service Prime Now as it is currently available only in select cities via a smart phone app.

Currently, the service is available in major cities such as New York and Chicago, and costs $7.99 for one-hour delivery and is free for two-hour delivery. As part of the expansion, Amazon would make the service available through its website. This comes as Amazon is trying to get more subscribes to pay $99 annually to purchase its Prime package, which includes streaming video and expedited shipping.

The Prime Now service works directly with local shops and supermarkets to bring home delivery of basic household items and food.

According to Bloomberg, Amazon is working on a way to charge brands for placement on its site, similar to how grocery stores charge for more-visible shelf space in its stores.

Prime Now is not the only way Amazon is looking at delivering products quickly. In January, Amazon announced plans to launch a drone service, which would allow for items to be dropped off from warehouses through unmanned aircrafts.
