UB Police and Homeland Security are working to identify a counterfeit check scammer

Posted

University at Buffalo Police are teaming up with investigators from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Officials say an ongoing check scam has police on alert after a scammer contacted a UB student through his or her email a year ago.

According to UB Police, the scammer sent a student a counterfeit check. The scammer asked the student to send back an amount less than the check was worth to buy a product that the student would then sell.

Police say this particular scam seems to be targeting only UB students.

UB Police are asking any students or faculty who have been affected by this scam to file a police report immediately. The information will be shared with HSI as both parties work to identify the suspects involved.

If you were a victim of this scam, call 645-2227 and ask to speak with Investigator Rehberg.
