Tom Donnelly, race director of the consistently sold-out Turkey Trot, has died.

Checkers AC, of which Donnelly was the president, reported his death on their website late Saturday night, saying, in part, “Multi-race director, tireless runner, and great friend to so many, Tom Donnelly, has passed away very unexpectedly.”

The Buffalo News reports the 61-year-old died of an apparent heart attack.

Donnelly ran his first Turkey Trot in 1977 and would run 25 more before becoming race director. He served in that role for more than a decade.

He is survived by his wife and four children.
