The Buffalo Professional Firefighters Local 282 are getting into the holiday spirit by holding a stuffed animal drive for patients at John R. Oishei Children's Hospital. The Local 282 is collecting new stuffed animals now through December 27.
Last year, firefighter Kevin Sikorski designed and sold t-shirts in honor of the firefighters from Truck 5 who were tragically killed in action in December 1983. The t-shirt sales generated approximately $1,200 which was then used to buy stuffed animals and toys for patients at Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo.
"Our firefighters strive to be involved in our community in so many ways more than just fighting fires," said Vincent Ventresca, president of Local 282. "Giving back to the community is a fundamental part of who we are and this initiative started by firefighter Sikorski is a shining example of that. With the holiday season upon us, we just want to bring some joy to these kids any way we can."
"While personally delivering the toys to the children with the families of the fallen firefighters, we soon realized that the stuffed animals were by far the most popular item amongst the kids, which led us to starting this initiative," said
Donations can be dropped off at the Local 282's union office located at 500 Southside Parkway in Buffalo between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
