Neighbors in Toronto are in mourning after a mass shooting on took place in a part of the city called “The Danforth.” People who live and work in the area tell 7 Eyewitness News that they are stunned and heartbroken.

“As Torontonians, we are used to saying ‘oh dear, that happened in the States or that happened in Paris.’ Well guess what, it is now in our city.”

“The Danforth” and Greektown are popular family-friendly spots along Danforth Avenue in Toronto, with numerous shops, stores and restaurants.

Sunday night, it was turned into a killing zone as a 29-year-old gunman made his way along the crowded street, shooting into cafes. The Ontario Provincial Police Special Investigations Unit is now in charge of the case because the gunman died after a shootout with Toronto police officers.

Throughout the day, people came to the area to see for themselves, and while many were very sad, others we spoke with say they were not totally surprised.

A mother and her daughter came to the scene of the shootings to hand out flowers. They say it’s to remind everyone that “The Danforth” will not be scared off by the act of violence.

Ed Reilly has more in his report.
