Back to school means back to books. Students are lugging around books in their backpacks that the New York State Health Department says is making them too heavy.
NYSDOH says backpacks should be less than 10-15% of your child's weight.
Here are some tips to keep the weight down:
- Make sure the bag itself is lightweight
- Help children determine what should stay locked up at school versus carried home
- Leave unnecessary items at home - such as games and maybe even a laptop
- Have them carry lunch separately
