The Genesee County Sheriffs Office is investigating a theft of several items taken from the memorial in the front yard of the State Street Road Fire, where two small children died over the weekend in Batavia.

Items that were taken include a decorative fire extinguisher, a teddy bear, and a white cross (approximately 2 feet high.)

Several other memorial items were located thrown on the shoulder of State Street Road, indicating those responsible departed the scene on foot south towards the City of Batavia.

The theft occurred after a memorial service on May 21st in the evening, or early in the morning on May 22nd.

Anyone with information regarding the missing items is asked to contact the Genesee County Sheriffs Office at 585-343-5000.

UPDATE:

The family reports both the cross and teddy bear have been returned to the memorial.

They were taken by another family member to add some additional decoration and were not stolen.

The family is grateful for the assistance of the public in the matter.
